Every now and again I am reminded of how vastly illiterate I am. I noticed this a lot in Oxford when I was in Blackwells looking at their Medieval section. The problem is, I am even less well read when it comes to modern works than I am with the medievals. In terms of modern reading, most of what I have read by choice is in some way related to the Inklings i.e. read by the Inklings, written by the Inklings, or strongly influenced by the Inklings. While the Inklings are really first class authors and I certainly am glad to have focused so much on them, I get the feeling that I run the risk of being fairly insular (and Insular [ho ho!]) in my thinking. Therefore, here is my reading list for the summer of non-Inklings related (mostly) books:
Fahrenheit 451- Ray Bradbury
The Martian Chronicles- Ray Bradbury
The Great Gatsby- F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Grapes of Wrath- Steinbeck
1984- George Orwell
Brave New World- Aldous Huxley
Atlas Shrugged- Ayn Rand
The Fountainhead- Ayn Rand
The Catcher in the Rye- JD Salinger
Enders Game- Orson Scott Card
Heart of Darkness- Joseph Conrad
The Kingdom Triangle- JP Moreland
The God Delusion- Richard Dawkins
We'll see how far I get through this list. One of my other summer goals is translating half of Beowulf (like thats really gonna happen), so I am not sure how much I'll get done. Of course, all summer goals and reading lists will be thrown to the wayside once Deathly Hallows arrives. It is meet and right so to do.
