Art helps you to see a moment, an idea, or a place through the mental filter of another person. If that person turns out to have something good or substantive to say about that moment/idea/place, then the viewer/reader/listener in turn has their capacity of understanding enhanced and expanded.
Example: I will admit very readily that I do not have any sort of eye for photography. I could spend 5 seconds or 30 minutes taking a picture and the result would be exactly the same. I am unable to visually capture or distill the beauty of moments or places, or at least what I do capture is more akin to unformed primal material ("aderat confusis partibus yle"). However, friends or family members of mine who are much more skilled in photography are able to shape the unformed material of the moment/thing and make engaging representations. When I look at one of Ben's photos, I see Ben's unique perception of his subject, which corresponds in some part to the truth of the thing. Granted, the artist does not capture the entire beauty or truth of their subject, since that is humanly impossible, but they are able to extend their experience to others. When I experience art by El Greco, Beethoven, or Charles Williams I am for that instant able to see what they see or conform my way of thinking or experiencing to theirs. Art allows the audience to experience life from a different perspective and gives the opportunity of improving the general experiencing of life.
And so I am sad that Sufjan will not be making (or at least trying to make) an album for each of the 50 states. Come on and feel the Illinoise is a great album and though I've spent almost no time in Illinois it was interesting to see (or hear) the state through Sufjan's eyes (or ears). Let's be honest: a lot of Sufjan's instrumentation is just plain weird and those sorts of sounds are not what immediately come to mind when one thinks about Illinois. And yet, they are apparently what come to Sufjan's mind and we the hoi poloi are now able to experience the history and geography of the state differently as a result. I was really hoping to hear his take on California, since the state is so dynamic and has so many good and bad parts to it. What would it have sounded like and how would it have changed or impacted my understanding of my home state? I sort of feel like his decision not to make the attempt is like Spenser's unfinished Faerie Queene, Keats' early death, or Hopkins' burnt poetry.
Ok, maybe that is a bit of an exaguration.
All the same, alas for the beauty that might have been. Maybe the muse will return and he will change his mind.
